'Call It Brilliant, or Call It Bull': Gary Koch Answers Golf's Hot-Button Issues

It's time to play "Call It Brilliant, Or Call It Bull," the new game show that looks at golf's hot-button issues the way a politician eyes a photo op.

Today's special guest is NBC golf analyst Gary Koch, a former PGA Tour player with six career wins and a whole bunch of knowledge and insight.

For those wanting to play along at home, the rules are simple. Contestants are read a statement relating to a PGA Tour subject of debate, then they make the call -- "Brilliant," or "Bull."

And Koch, a veteran player and course designer preparing for his 14th year of service to NBC, knows Brilliant when he sees it, and Bull when it is being shoveled his way.

So, Gary Koch, are you ready to play?

Wait a minute. You're not Bob Barker. ... and we're not even in a studio.

OK, let's get started.

The 'Guru of Go' Helps Oregon's Football Team Understand Playing Fast

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Before this magical season, Oregon coach Chip Kelly asked someone if he could speak to his team. Perhaps provide a few pointers that might help the Ducks with their fast-paced offense. So Kelly only had to walk down the hall of the Casanova Center to find the right person.

Former Loyola-Marymount coach Paul Westhead, whose run-and-gun style featuring Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble carried the Lions to the 1990 NCAA Elite Eight, is in his second season as Oregon's women's basketball coach. Before Oregon embarked on its 12-0 season that earned it a spot in Monday's BCS title game against Auburn, Kelly sought out the "Guru of Go."

"There are three things that are important," Westhead told FanHouse. "You have to do it in a split second as fast as you can, you have to repeat it over and over again and the third component, you have to sustain what you are repeating. Go fast, do it over and over and do it for as many possessions as the game gives you.

"They've done it to the max. They've cracked the opposition in the second half. It's not all of a sudden the opponents got bad, they just got worn down."

2011 NFL Mock Draft, Version 1.1: Adjusting for Andrew Luck's Decision

Andrew Luck decided to throw a curveball at FanHouse's first 2011 NFL Mock Draft.

Bob McNair: Wade Phillips Makes Texans' Coaching Staff Better Than Ever

Bob McNair said before last season he believed the Houston Texans had their best team in franchise history.

Now, the Texans' owner said be believes they have the coaching staff to match.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak, after firing four defensive assistants on Monday -- including defensive coordinator Frank Bush -- on Wednesday evening officially hired former Dallas Cowboys head coach and longtime defensive coordinator Wade Phillips as the coordinator.

The pending hiring of Phillips had been rumored and reported for nearly a week.

Following the firing of Bush and the three defensive assistants, McNair said he plan was to hire a coordinator with a proven track record of NFL success. On Thursday, he said Phillips very much meets that criteria.

"I've never been so confident about our coaching staff as I am now," Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com quoted McNair saying Thursday. "We have absolutely the best coaching staff we've ever had. It would've made a difference for us last year.

PGA Tour Q-School's 10 Best Qualifiers

The PGA Tour's Q-School has always been a test of nerves, physical conditioning, and mental fortitude. It's intended to test the mettle of young players and make them earn their way onto the top tour in golf. Veteran Billy Mayfair proved last week that experience trumps energy level, as he claimed medalist honors from the 166-man field.

Mayfair and eight other players over the age of 30 were among the 29 qualifiers that earned a tour card for 2011. Some other numbers of note about your newest Tour members include seven international players, only eight players without a PGA Tour start in their career, and 18 of the 29 will officially be rookies in 2011.

Now that you know the make-up of the 29 qualifiers, let's take a look at who is most likely to make an impact in 2011:

Eric Lichaj Singled Out by Aston Villa Coach Following Heavy Loss

Recent U.S. national team debutant and Aston Villa right back Eric Lichaj has had a rollercoaster week, to say the least.

The 22-year-old Chicagoland native earned widespread praise for his performance on Monday, when he gamely bottled up dynamic Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale. Villa lost, 2-1, but Lichaj was an obvious bright spot in what was just his second English Premier League start.

But when the Villans were on the losing end again Wednesday, this time by a 4-0 count at Manchester City that dropped the club to 5-9-5, manager Gérard Houllier ensured that Lichaj would again be the subject of post-match conversation. He singled out his young defender, saying he had a "nightmare" of a game.
