Bartolo Colon, Yankees Reportedly Agree to Minor-League Deal

The Yankees and former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon have agreed to a minor-league deal, according to a report by FOXSports.com.

Colon, who last pitched in the major leagues with the White Sox in 2009, will join Mark Prior in Yankees camp as the pair of once elite pitchers attempts to hang on to their respective big-league careers.

Given New York's uncertain starting pitching situation, Colon will certainly have a shot to make an impression. After CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett, the Yankees' rotation depth chart features an unproven rookie in Ivan Nova and a journeyman in Sergio Mitre.

Phil Simms, Jim Nantz Respond to Charges of Patriots Bias

Few things draw the ire of network announcers more than allegations that they favor one team or player over another or that they pull punches. That, and cutting off their clothing and hair-care allowances.

So, it shouldn't have come as a surprise that Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, CBS' No.1 NFL announce team, were all too happy to refute allegations that they took a little off their respective fastballs recently and made too nice with the New England Patriots during last Sunday's telecast.

"That's always the case, especially with fans," said Simms Thursday during a conference call to promote CBS' coverage of Sunday's AFC championship game between Pittsburgh and the New York Jets. "I walk out of the booth almost every week (and hear), 'Aw, you don't say enough good things about us.' "

Simms added, in a sarcastic tone, "That's OK. You're right. I want to show favoritism and get fired."

The piece that triggered the response was written by veteran media critic Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News, who contended Monday that Simms had failed to take Patriots coach Bill Belichick to task for strategic gaffes he might have made during Sunday's divisional playoff loss to the Jets.

Brian Cashman: 'I'd Be Surprised' If Derek Jeter Stays at Shortstop

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman attended WFAN's Breakfast With a Champion event on Tuesday morning, and in a question and answer session with those in attendance he pulled few punches about the future of his team. (Quotes come via espnW's Amanda Rykoff.)

Cashman was particularly frank when asked whether Derek Jeter could see out his current contract at shortstop. The Yankees captain signed a three-year, $51 million deal with a player option for a fourth year last month.

"I'd be surprised if he plays shortstop for all four years (of his deal)," Cashman said. "I see him moving to the outfield."

Roger Clemens' Lawyers Seek Dismissal of Perjury Case

Lawyers for Roger Clemens asked the perjury and obstruction case against the seven-time Cy Young Award winner be tossed because the indictment is too vague, one of several motions made in filings on Friday.

Rusty Hardin, Clemens' lead attorney, wrote that the way the the charges against are "inextricably intertwined with the broad and unconstitutional allegation" linked to the single count of obstruction, that the case should be dismissed. Hardin also said that the five other charges -- three counts of making false statements and two counts of perjury tied to testimony in front of a Congressional subcommittee in 2008 -- overlap.

These are much of the same objections Hardin voiced in a hearing in U.S. District Court in December. Clemens' trial is scheduled to begin in Washington on July 6.

In separate filings, U.S. Attorney's office also revealed some of the evidence it may present and asked for an inquiry into whether Hardin has a conflict of interest in the case.

Carl Landry Wants to Win, Hopefully in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Carl Landry knows his time in Sacramento might be nearing an end.

But contrary to popular opinion, that isn't necessarily the way he wants it.

The Kings forward has been the subject of trade discussions for months now, with the logic behind such chatter two-fold. Despite the in-house hype that surrounded him after he was traded from Houston last February in the deal that sent Kevin Martin to the Rockets, the additions of DeMarcus Cousins and Samuel Dalembert in the offseason meant Landry might not be a building block in this castle after all.

Secondly, his looming free agency has made him a prime candidate to be moved, with sources insisting for months that Landry -- who's being paid $3 million in the final season of his contract -- had little-to-no interest in returning to Sacramento. The Kings, in turn, were faced with the option of getting something for him now rather than losing him for nothing in return later. Landry, however, doesn't see it that way.

"I love it here," Landry told me last week. "I love the city, love the community, definitely love the fans. Without a doubt (he would consider signing with the Kings this summer)."
