Breaking down the Auburn Tigers going into Monday's BCS Championship Game against Oregon in Glendale, Ariz.:
WHAT WE FIGURED THIS TEAM FOR IN PRESEASON
Auburn began the season ranked 23rd in the preseason poll. That's the lowest preseason ranking for any team to ever advance to the BCS title game. In our preseason look-ahead at FanHouse we predicted as follows:
"There's even an outside chance that Auburn could be 10-1, or, be still the trembling War Eagle heart, 11-0, heading into Tuscaloosa on the final week of the regular season.
"Of course, uncertainly looms as the Tigers will be breaking in a new quarterback, likely former Florida stud Cameron Newton. But the entire offense will be working on a second season in offensive guru Gus Malzahn's wizard-like system, and the biggest question is whether the offense can maintain a consistent rhythm. Last year Auburn's offense stagnated after a 5-0 start, and the Tigers limped home with a 1-5 record against remaining FBS competition."
Back in August FanHouse predicted the Tigers would finish 9-3.
SO HOW DID 13-0 HAPPEN?
Cam Newton signed to quarterback the Tigers and was better than even the most starry-eyed Tiger fan could have ever believed. By the first week in October, before the Cecil Newton mess arose, I'd endorsed Cam Newton for the Heisman Trophy. By the end of November, after he'd brought his team back from a 24-0 road deficit at Alabama, Newton had firmly established he was the best player in college football.
