VANCOUVER -- Dan Hamhuis became the latest wounded Vancouver Canucks defenseman Wednesday night. The Canucks lost Hamhuis on a blindside hit from behind by Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf in the third period. Hamhuis lay on the ice for a couple minutes before he was helped off the ice with assistance.
No penalty was called on the play. Getzlaf, playing his first game after missing 14 with multiple sinus fractures suffered when he took a puck in the face, was apologetic after the Ducks' 4-3 victory at Rogers Arena.
"I was going in to make a play and it's one of those things that happens in a game and I wish nothing but the best for him," said Getzlaf, who had an assist and was plus-2 on the night. "Obviously, I don't want to hurt anybody out there. I went in to make the play. I didn't leave my feet, I kept my shoulder down and he was just following through on a pass and it was an unfortunate accident."
Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said the hit was legal and went as far to suggest the collision was Hamhuis' fault.
"Hamhuis turned his back," said Carlyle. "He saw Getzlaf coming. He just made the pass and turned his back, and that was shoulder on shoulder. That's the way I viewed it."
