FanHouse's college football staff provides you with a personal quarterback. We do the primary and secondary reads for you so you can properly start your day.1. Did you watch the BCS National Championship Monday night? You're on a college football website, so I'll assume the answer is "yes." You were hardly alone. ESPN's broadcast of the game set an all-time cable viewership record with more than 27 million viewers. The old record was held by a Minnesota-Green Bay Monday Night Football game in 2009, Brett Favre's first game against the Packers as a Viking. That's great news for ESPN, but the overall viewership was down 3.5 million people from last year's broadcast on ABC and well short of the NFL Wild Card games on Saturday and Sunday.
2. Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich missed the 2009 season for a pretty good reason: He was fighting cancer. He returned to the field this season and picked up right where he left off as one of BC's top defenders. His story is inspiring, so it should be no surprise Herzlich was given the fourth annual Rudy Award during a special breakfast Tuesday at the American Football Coaches Association convention in Dallas. We congratulate Herzlich on his many great accomplishments. Beating cancer would have been enough, but returning to his pre-sickness form as a football player is an incredible accomplishment. It couldn't have happened without exceptional determination, the same sort of determination the actual Rudy is known for.
