On Friday, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced the late addition of Eugene Starikov, 22, to the national team's California camp. Starikov, who goes by "Yevgeni" in Russia, plays in the country's first division for FC Tom Tomsk. The city of Tomsk is located in Russia's Siberian Federal District. It boasts a population of about 500,000 people and a soccer club that finished an impressive eighth in the recently concluded Premier League season.
The average annual temperature in Tomsk is 33 degrees, which probably bothers Starikov a whole lot more than one might think. It turns out he spent most of his childhood in Florida and is a U.S. citizen.
