Non-AQ Report: Middle Tennessee Searches for Coordinators

Rick StockstillAfter a year with new coordinators, Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill has decided to go in a different direction.

The school announced Thursday that offensive coordinator Mike Schultz and defensive coordinator Randall McCray had been let go. A nationwide search for their replacements is underway.

Schultz and McCray replaced Tony Franklin and Manny Diaz, respectively, after the 2009 season. That season, Middle Tennessee finished 10-3, its first 10-win season, and quarterback Dwight Dasher garnered national buzz as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.

But the Blue Raiders couldn't keep up the momentum once Franklin and Diaz left. Middle Tennessee averaged 371.92 yards per game and 26.46 points per game this year after averaging 421.69 yards and 32 points a year ago. Defensively, the Blue Raiders allowed 30 more yards per game and five more points than they did in 2009.

Both Schultz and McCray were on two-year contracts by the university. Reports have indicated that McCray may have left MTSU for a position at Texas State with new head coach Dennis Franchione.

Middle Tennessee's next offensive coordinator will be the fourth in the past four years. Prior to McCray, G.A. Mangus went to South Carolina after the 2008 season and Franklin went to Louisiana Tech to coach with good friend Sonny Dykes.

Diaz left MTSU to take the defensive coordinator position at Mississippi State and just accepted the same position at Texas.
