Notre Dame Defense Goes From Sour to Suddenly Super

Filed under:

NEW YORK -- Notre Dame is winning football games in November.

Notre Dame is winning football games in November with defense.

Notre Dame is winning football games in November with defense and without its "best defensive player," nose tackle Ian Williams.

Which of those three sentences is most astounding? Does it matter? Our "Kelly's Believe it Or Not" list ends at three, which coincidentally is the number of points the Irish have allowed in each of their past two games. The Fighting Irish, who silenced Army 27-3 on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium, have shed their "November Wane" image in very nearly a New York minute.

"I know this doesn't make for a good story," said coach Brian Kelly after the Irish moved above .500 (6-5) for the first time since Week 1, "but it's the culmination of the same message we've been giving the players. We're playing fast. We're playing physical. There's a lot of things that go into that."

That the Irish have turned around their season somewhat after what was likely the worst eight days in the program's history last month is incredible. That they've done so by putting forth their best two defensive efforts since the 1988 national championship season is, well ... were we apostles we might ask if we might stick a finger in the wounds to see if they were real.
