If one of the big criticisms of Don Mattingly is his lack of experience, then he and the Dodgers are apparently doing everything possible to assuage that worry with his coaching staff. The club named their 2011 coaching staff today and it includes plenty of managing and coaching experience. Included on Mattingly's staff next year will be Davey Lopes, Trey Hillman and Tim Wallach.
Hillman, who will be Mattingly's bench coach, joins the club less than a year after being fired as the Kansas City Royals manager in his third year on the job. Prior to working in Kansas City, he managed the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan, helping them to a 2006 championship.
Lopes will join the club as a first-base coach, which is the job he most recently held in Philadelphia before failing to come to an agreement on a contract extension after the 2011 season.
