Donovan McNabb's Bonus Reportedly Not Due Until Start of 2011 Season

Donovan McNabbWhen news of Donovan McNabb's new contract leaked on Monday just before the Redskins' Monday night game, it sounded like an amazing deal for a veteran quarterback who was benched just a couple of weeks ago.

Every day since then, the deal keeps diminishing.

On Monday night, the deal was announced as having $40 million guaranteed. A day later Adam Schefter announced that the deal actually guaranteed only $3.5 million, as the Redskins have an option bonus that allows them to cut McNabb loose for little cost before the 2011 season. Now another key detail has leaked.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that the $10 million option bonus doesn't come due until the day after the 2011 season begins. So the Redskins hold all the power in deciding whether McNabb will be the long-term quarterback of the future or the short-term stopgap. For instance, if the Redskins decided to draft a young quarterback this spring, they could keep McNabb through training camp, then dump him right before the season (either by trade or releasing him) if they decide their quarterback of the future is ready to go.
