Atlanta Thrashers forward Ben Eager put his team in a huge hole on Friday night by sucker punching Toronto's Colby Armstrong late in the second period, leading to a five-minute power play that resulted in four Maple Leafs goals. When the final horn sounded, Atlanta was on the receiving end of a 9-3 beatdown, with five of the goals coming while the team was attempting to kill penalties taken by Eager (Toronto had a power play goal earlier in the game that was the result of an Eager penalty). On Saturday, the NHL quickly acted and hit Eager with a four-game suspension that will cost him over $20,000 in salary.
Following the game, Eager had some harsh words for Armstrong saying, via Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, "[Armstrong's] one of the biggest phonies in the league. He's done his fair share of dirty stuff in the league, and he'll never answer the bell. What goes around, comes around. I'm sure some day someone will catch him with his head down."
There's no doubt Armstrong has dished out his share of big, and at times borderline, hits over the years (some examples here, here, here, here, and here) but that's still not any justification for what Eager did on Friday.
