But the fact that they have come so close the past two weeks to notching that first victory -- falling in overtime at Baltimore and then again in overtime Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs -- has the Bills believing they are very close. Of course close only counts in horseshoes, and the Chicago Bears certainly don't plan on becoming Buffalo's first victim this Sunday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, which will be a home game for the Bills.
Still, Buffalo's players have to remain optimistic with nine games still left to be played and try to ignore the air of negativity that seems to be following the team. To a man, as these competitors intend to go out each and every game and play to win, believing that eventually things will change for the better.
"It's horrible to think we're the only winless team in the NFL. No one wants to be able to say that you're part of that. But that's the reality," Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny said. "But each week, man, we're getting a step closer. You can't get any closer than where we're at."
Actually, had Kansas City's Ryan Succop missed his 35-yard field goal as time expired Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium the Bills would have gotten closer -- with a tie. That extra period just about summed up Buffalo's futility, with Rian Lindell seemingly winning the game with a 53-yard field goal only to turn and see that the Chiefs had called timeout right before his foot hit the ball. His second attempt hit the right upright, keeping the game tied.
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick also missed a wide open C.J. Spiller for what would have been the game-winning touchdown in overtime after earlier throwing an interception with 32 seconds left in regulation and the Bills at the Kansas City 41 driving towards a winning field goal.
With that much bad luck finding its way onto one NFL team it stands to reason that their fortunes will turn.
"That's kind of what we keep telling each other," Fitzpatrick said. "We need to get over the hump, get one win, and then we think things will start rolling and bouncing in our direction."
Or things could continue to spiral downward, which is what happened to the Detroit Lions in 2008 when they finished 0-16 and to the Miami Dolphins in 2007 when they finished 1-15. That was my first season covering the Dolphins for Dolphins.com and I remember how after they lost the season opener at the Washington Redskins in overtime, 16-13, week after week they kept finding ways to lose.
