Jason Garrett has been named interim head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, promoted from offensive coordinator to replace the fired Wade Phillips for the final eight weeks of the season. But sources close to the situation tell FanHouse that Garrett has been promised nothing beyond that.Cowboys owner Jerry Jones intends to conduct a full-blown search for the team's next head coach, and that search is expected to include the pursuit of two Super Bowl winning coaches, Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden. Sources tell FanHouse that Jones covets a big-name coach, and that he was intrigued late last year by the idea of hiring Mike Shanahan. But the Cowboys' hot finish to the 2009-10 season, and the resulting high expectations for this year, convinced Jones that Phillips deserved to be back. Meanwhile, Shanahan signed on to coach the division-rival Redskins.
Now, Jones is likely to pursue a big-time coach who can take charge and restore respectability the way Shanahan has done so far in Washington. That's why names like Cowher, Gruden, maybe even that of John Fox (whose contract is up and isn't expected back in Carolina) will come up during the process. But the 44-year-old Garrett has something those other guys don't have right now -- the job itself. And eight weeks in which to prove he can do it.
