U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati twice has tried to woo Klinsmann to be national team coach, but each time negotiations broke down over the German-Californian's desire for more control. His only job since the 2006 World Cup was a nine-month stint with Bayern Munich that ended in acrimony.
Yet Klinsmann's success with the German national team in 2006, his cosmopolitan air and the fact that he's always available continue to lead many believe that he's capable of great things in management. Desperate for some stability after dismissing its coach and GM and missing the playoffs for a record-tying fourth consecutive year, Toronto FC appears ready to take the plunge.
