The New York Jets underwent a supplemental education program mandated by the NFL in the aftermath of the team's treatment of Mexican TV reporter Ines Sainz, the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) announced Tuesday night.AWSM president Amy Moritz and Robert Gulliver, the league's executive vice president of human resources, were in attendance at the hour-long session that focused on proper workplace etiquette, Jets spokesman Bruce Speight told FanHouse.
"We of course are happy the Jets followed through on their promise to include AWSM as they address media access issues," Moritz said in the statement. "It is an opportunity to continue our efforts to ensure equal access and equal treatment is standard operating procedure."
The league ruled that Sainz, a reporter for TV Azteca, was the victim of "unprofessional conduct" during a practice in September. Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote that "there seems little doubt that passes were thrown in Sainz's direction" and there were reports that she received catcalls in the locker room.
The league opted for an education program over fines or other sanctions. Seyfarth Shaw at Work ran Tuesday's session for coaches and players, and the human resources consulting firm will conduct another for the team's other employees in two weeks, according to Speight.
"The program was geared toward how to interact in the workplace, including with the media, coaches, teammates and others they might come into contact with," Speight said. "The session was very interactive."
AWSM will continue to work with the league as the NFL expands a similar training program to all 32 teams. The NFL previously announced that rookies will also go through an expanded media training program starting in 2011.
"This remains an ongoing process," Moritz said. "The NFL has been open to suggestions from AWSM and we are happy to be participating in a dialogue with them."
