Witnesses Reportedly Said USC-UCLA Fan Brawl Not Tied to Rivalry

A stabbing incident before the USC-UCLA game at the Rose Bowl Saturday night has a further development. Witnesses to the brawl said a stabbing incident that sent two men to the hospital had nothing to do with the rivalry, debunking an earlier report where police said that was the reason, as well as alcohol.

Witnesses told The Los Angeles Times that a fight broke out after a group of tailgaters threw a football that accidentally hit a black Mercedes-Benz belonging to another group of fans who also had been partying for hours.

Police mentioned that both alcohol and the intense fan rivalry resulted in the huge brawl.

But friends of the victims denied that was the reason, according to the Los Angeles Times report.

"It was just drunken guys looking to start a fight," said Renee Breceda, the girlfriend of one of the stabbing victims, Joshua Dirling.

According to the Times, the brawl began at about 4:30 p.m. in parking lot 1 at the Rose Bowl.Dozens of people had been tailgating and drinking since the wee hours of the morning.

Police called to the scene found 50 to 75 people fighting, Cmdr. Darryl Qualls of the Pasadena Police Department told the Times. Some of the officers were injured in the fight that lasted over 15 minutes, according to Quall.
