Matt Cassel didn't practice Friday, keeping his playing status for Sunday in doubt. Two days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy, Cassel hasn't officially been ruled out of the Chiefs' upcoming game against the Chargers. But Brodie Croyle took the first-team snaps Friday, indicating that Cassel will likely sit for the division contest.
Croyle hasn't started a game since the 2009 opener and hasn't thrown a pass in the regular season in a year. He's winless as an NFL starter.
"You're not out there in the action," Haley said of Croyle's inactivity. "It's been a long time. ... Brodie's been around here a long time now. I have a very good feel for Brodie, as do the coaches."
Cassel has stepped it up in his second season in Kansas City. The sixth-year player ranks fifth in the NFL in QB rating (98.4) and touchdowns (23).
