Two days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy, Cassel hasn't officially been ruled out of the Chiefs' upcoming game against the Chargers. But Brodie Croyle took the first-team snaps Friday, indicating that Cassel will likely sit for the division contest.
Croyle hasn't started a game since the 2009 opener and hasn't thrown a pass in the regular season in a year. He's winless as an NFL starter.
"You're not out there in the action," Haley said of Croyle's inactivity. "It's been a long time. ... Brodie's been around here a long time now. I have a very good feel for Brodie, as do the coaches."
Cassel has stepped it up in his second season in Kansas City. The sixth-year player ranks fifth in the NFL in QB rating (98.4) and touchdowns (23).
