Alex Smith won't take the field as the 49ers' starting quarterback this Sunday in London. And beyond. The former No. 1 overall pick will miss two to three weeks with a separated shoulder suffered last week against the Panthers, Mike Singletary revealed Wednesday. David Carr took Smith's place against the Panthers Sunday, but he's been passed over in favor of Troy Smith, who gets the starting nod this Sunday.
"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "He has enough of the offense to play." Singletary continued about the move to start Smith instead of Carr, another former No. 1 overall pick: "I talked to David Carr about it. He understands."
