Major League Soccer took a significant step forward when it realized that its salvation wouldn't be arriving in a minivan full of kids wearing shin guards.
The league launched while I was in college, and I spent the summer of 1996 -- the inaugural season -- as a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none intern for D.C. United. On a few occasions I drove out to youth soccer tournaments armed with boxes of ticket brochures and temporary tattoos in an effort to convince the suburban soccer moms to journey into the city and support the new/local club.
The responses usually ranged from "But we're all so busy with the kids' activities," to "You mean like actually cross the border into the District of Columbia? Is that safe?"
