Braves Cut Takashi Saito, Melky Cabrera

It's about time for the roster-shuffling season to kick into high gear, and the Braves got things rolling Tuesday by releasing reliever Takashi Saito and outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Both newcomers to Atlanta for 2010, the two ended up on opposite ends of the performance spectrum. The 40-year-old Saito became a bullpen stalwart for Bobby Cox, posting a 2.83 ERA and striking out 69 in just 54 innings.

Cabrera, meanwhile, didn't do much of anything, hitting .255 with four homers and 42 RBI while posting a .671 OPS in 147 games.

While dumping Cabrera was a no-brainer, the Braves had to release Saito under the terms of the contract he agreed to last winter. Saito missed the end of the season and the playoffs with a shoulder problem but is not planning to retire, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
