The Storyline: The Chiefs played probably their best overall game of the season but were overtaken by a late Houston rally that produced 14 points in the final 3:30 and lost 35-31 to the Texans. It was the second straight loss for Kansas City after opening the season 3-0. Thomas Jones' 11-yard touchdown run midway through the final period put the Chiefs ahead 31-21, but it was all Texans after that. Matt Schaub got the Texans within striking distance with an 86-yard drive that Arian Foster finished with a 1-yard touchdown run. Then, with 28 seconds to go, Schaub hooked up with Andre Johnson on the decisive 11-yard touchdown lifting the Texans to victory.
Key Moment: Driving in the late going and down by three points, the Texans converted a critical third-and-10 when Schaub threaded a pass over the middle to tight end Owen Daniels for an 11-yard gain to the Kansas City 13-yard line. The completion enabled the Texans to go for the win rather than a tying field goal, and one play later, Schaub hit Johnson with an 11-yard touchdown pass to complete the Texans' stunning fourth-quarter comeback.
Key Stat: The Chiefs had a 100-yard rusher and a 100-yard receiver. Thomas Jones ran 19 times for 100 yards and Dwayne Bowe, rebounding from a tough outing last week in which he dropped a potential TD pass at Indianapolis, had six receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Only four yards separated the teams' offensive output, with the Chiefs totaling 417 to 421 for the Texans.
Where they stand: Despite dropping to 3-2, Kansas City maintained its lead in the AFC West over the Raiders, Broncos and Chargers, all tied for second at 2-4.
Notable: Matt Cassel had his finest outing of the season, completing 20 of 29 for 201 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He had a passer rating of 122.9. The first of his three touchdown passes went to linebacker Mike Vrabel. The occasional fullback has caught 10 passes in his career, all for touchdowns.
