Colorado Rapids Reach Rocky Mountain High, End Playoff Drought

CARSON, CA -- Two years ago, the Colorado Rapids missed the MLS playoffs by one point. A win in their final match of the season, a home game against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Real Salt Lake, would have sent them through. But after 90 minutes it was 1-1, and the Rapids were headed on an early vacation.

Last year, the Rapids finished the regular season tied with RSL and D.C. United for the final berth, but lost out on goal differential. Again, a win in their final game against visiting Salt Lake would have pushed them over the hump. But a 3-0 defeat meant a third consecutive autumn without playoff soccer.

In 2010, the Rapids will once again close out their MLS regular season against Real Salt Lake, but this time Colorado has left nothing to chance. It's already in the postseason.

"It means a ton to be in the playoffs," Colorado midfielder Jeff Larentowicz told FanHouse. "All I've heard this year is that our goal is to get into the playoffs, to turn around the bad fortunes that the team has had in the last two years. For us to get in on a win against one of the best teams is incredibly important."
