Auburn Beats Arkansas in Shootout

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn linebacker Craig Stevens didn't see this one coming.

He watched with surprise Saturday when Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, perhaps the best pocket passer in college football, didn't return after a second-quarter blow to the head. An untested sophomore named Tyler Wilson entered the game.

It might as well have been a circus clown.

"We knocked Mallett out of the game and here's a kid we don't even know coming in for them," Stevens said. "I mean, think about how long it should take him to get his mind right. And he's in a big game like this? I didn't think he could do it."

He almost did.

Wilson was remarkably effective throughout the second and third quarters, providing Arkansas fans an optimistic glimpse of the program's future. Yet when the time for fourth-quarter retorts became necessary, Wilson demonstrated his inexperience.
