Ryder Cup Video: Match Highlights

Filed under:

The heavy rain and dreadful weather at Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales on Friday caused a seven-hour and 18-minute rain delay, preventing the Ryder Cup's morning fourball matches from completing.

Because of the inclement weather, captains Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie agreed on a new format that has all 12 players competing on Saturday in a second session comprised of six foursome matches and a third session comprised of two foursome matches and four fourball matches. All 12 singles matches are still scheduled to be played on Sunday with the 28 original tournament points still at stake.

After a couple hours of play in the heavy rain on Friday morning, the four fourball matches were halted with the Europeans leading three of four contests. But the long weather delay helped the Americans regroup when play resumed in the late afternoon at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time.

When play was halted by darkness on Friday, the Americans turned the tables on the Europeans, taking control at Celtic Manor with less wind and no rain in play. The Americans ended Friday leading three of four contests.
