Two-time NASCAR champ Tony Stewart isn't one to mope and languish. So recalculating the math on his near-win in the New Hampshire Chase opener isn't something he's inclined to do.
But had he won that race -- as he was doing handily before running out of gas with a little more than a lap remaining in the race -- that victory, followed by a 21st place at Dover and his fourth place Sunday at Kansas -- would rank him third in the championship, only 33 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson.
Instead, as the series moves to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., for the fourth race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, the 96-point difference means Stewart is 10th in the standings, 127 points behind Johnson.
But he's not thinking about the would-haves or could-haves. Stewart is concentrating on what can be, and that's still an outside shot at his third Cup title -- a top-five in the championship at the very least.
